    Struggling With Numbers Today

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 10:27 AM EST [General]

UGGGHHHH! I am taking my placement tests all this week for starting college in January. It's going to be nice. It's all online. But this week I am taking placement tests in math, algebra, English and writing. OMG I am having such a hard time just with the math. I can't wait to get to the algeba. NOT! I am so horrble with math. I feel like I did back in high school. DUMB! I really can't wait to get to the English and writing part because I really do love them. But for the next two days or so I'll be struggling with numbers. Anyone out there want to tutor me? Hope everyone has a pleasant day. Know I love you. I just don't love numbers. Julie I will do my "N" gratitude list a little later. Numbers will not be on it.

    'Tis a shame :(

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 09:25 AM CST [General]

Faire has come and gone.  And I was only able to attend once :(  Either work or money had a role to play in my lack of attendance this year.  My heart feels saddened over the fact that faire is over and I feel like I havent gone.  There are years to come.  And hopefully this year I will be able to make a trip to Scarby.  Although I probably need to start saving and planning now.  Sometimes I wish faire would run year round.  But then when you think of that it might not have the same joy and fun as it currently does.  For the time being I will get to my sewing and hopefully have done a lot more by next faire season.

    Black Friday

    Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 09:21 PM [General]

So, was anyone else crazy enough to go out on Friday? We were. It was really for the sole purpose of checking out deals on new winter coats for a couple of small people who live in my house. I think they're supposed to be children, but they more often remind me of those monkeys that fling poo at each other at the zoo. Anyway, I intrepidly stumbled after my husband through Penney's and Sears trying to find winter coats for the boys. I say stumbled, because I found out yesterday that I do indeed have the flu. Do you know how they test you for that? They stick a great long, hurty swab up your nose. That's right. Up. Your. Nose.

    'Nuff said.

Friday was crazy. With a capital C. We went back on Saturday - cold and pouring down rain, and not quite so crazy. Oddly enough, I felt better on Saturday. We went to Dillard's. Now, I don't normally shop at Dillard's until they have their end-of-season sidewalk sales. I'm a huge bargain shopper, and I NEVER pay full price when I can buy on sale. We found a pair of winter coats - with Iron Man on them no less - on sale. I was happy. The boys are over the moon. The fact they don't insist on wearing them to bed boggles me.

Anyway, my Black Friday was very red. So was Cyber Monday. Some of that I put down to the fact that I could barely hold my head up, much less promote my wonderful shop (www.heartsabustin.etsy.com). Some of it, I don't have a clue. I'm sticking it out, though, envisioning the stampede of shoppers that will be beating down the doo (metaphorically) to heartsabustin. :)

Ya'll have a great day. Love ya!

    Hello everyone

    Unknown reader

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 03:14 PM GMT [General]

My cycle to work, most mornings, takes me under a railway bridge, through a tunnel in which people sleep. Since my shifts start late, and the cycle path back follows a different route, I hardly ever see the men themselves. I am intruding into an empty bedroom. Yesterday, amid the usual furniture - a flattened nest of corrugated cardboard; a half-dozen empty cans of whatever lager is currently cheapest - there was a novel by Henning Mankell.

I didn't see which one it was. I was past before the oddity had fully registered. But the fact of it wouldn't leave me. In a hard place on a bitter night in a rough and sightless part of an unsafe city, someone had been reading. And not just reading: reading grim and philosophical crime fiction set in the cold streets of another hard place.

My first thoughts, I will admit, were frivolous. Does the power of a high-profile TV adaptation reach that far? How? Are there cheap remainders of old editions about? Is someone giving away the books as a promotional tool? With more time, however, there were other lessons I would rather draw.

That addiction or mental illness or sheer rotten luck, even if they have brought you to the extremes of life, may not rob you of the capacity to take pleasure in another mind.

That the nature of what will be a pleasure, or a comfort, for any given person in any given place, can be extremely hard to guess.

That the idea of reading as some sort of restricted, elitist pastime is a lie, and also an insult to tens of thousands of people.

This morning the cans and the cardboard were still there. The book was gone.

Cold and flu season is here. Take this quiz to see how "germ-free" you are:

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 09:13 AM CST [General]

I have a cold today so this hit me right in the sinuses:

Cold and flu season is here. Take this quiz to see how "germ-free" you are:

    • You use public restrooms. - 3 points
    • You wash you hands afterwards + 3 points
    • You open the door with your bare hand - 3 points (That is where the germs are)
    • You open the door with the paper towel you dried with then toss it. +3 points
    • Given the choice of a row of stalls you take the farthest from the door. - 3 points (that is the germiest)
    • You use the stall closest to the door. +3 points (That is the cleanest)
    • You wash your hands for at least 10 seconds under running water. -3 points
    • You wash you hands for at least 20 seconds. +3 points (minimum time under running water to kill germs)
    • You use hot water while washing your hands. -3! Points (Hot water will cause you to wash for a shorter duration, and only boiling water kills germs)
    • Showering after a workout at the gym you wear flips flops or shower shoes. +3 points
    • You do not wear shower shoes or flip flops. -3 points (Bad germs there... bad)
    • You friend brings over his new dog and he gives you a big lick / kiss. -3 points (The myth of the dogs tongue being cleaner than ours is well. A myth!)
    • You fend off the dogs kiss and settle for a pat on the head. +3 points (Statistically the dogs head has the least germs. It is the part he can't lick!)

    Your score means?

If you scored in the negative numbers you should head to the closest decontamination shower immediately!

If you scored in the positive numbers you are fairly clean and worthy of a hug! Uh but make sure that person scored in the positive numbers first

The Impatient Crafter™ Free Holiday Craft Project Bindi Tin Ornaments

The Impatient Crafter Free Holiday Craft Project Bindi Tin Ornaments

(Click on images to see close up!)

I have had a stack of boxes of empty metal bindi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bindi_(decoration) tins sitting on a shelf in my studio for several years. I'd not yet devised a project for them, until this weekend when it occurred to me how much I love dioramas and those little sugar eggs you get at Easter and oh heck anything miniature and three dimensional for that matter. So after some trial, error, thinking and rethinking, I came up with these fun and easy to recreate ornaments you can make with virtually any tiny tins you have in your stash. I collect vintage paper and I'm always devising new ways to use it in my work. Be careful because I'm seriously warning you that these are addictive. I've only begun to make them! Now I'm scouring the thrift shops for miniature items to make tiny holiday scenes in them! (You can also use old Altoid or Fisherman's friend tins to make larger dioramas.)

This is a totally kid friendly concept with parental assistance, in fact my daughter Avalon made the lovely Lotteria rose tin!

    Bindi Tin Recrafted Diorama Ornaments
    Kid Tested-Mom Approved
    Free Holiday Craft Project
    Copyright 2008 Margot Potter

    For Personal Use Only!

    Materials
Metal Bindi Tins or other tiny tins with removable lids
Background papers (you can use scrapbook paper, handmade paper, ephemera or recycled magazine paper...I used scanned and sized vintage images, an image from a day book with Mexican posters in it, a small Lotteria card, an old handwritten letter and textured paper from India)
Scrapbook or card making stock (need a thicker paper for stand up letters)
Vintage playing cards (if you want to do something like the bear which is from a vintage children's card game.)
    Rubber Stampede Letter Stamps
    Ranger Archival ink jet black
    Stickles in coordinating colors
Beacon 3 in 1 Advanced craft glue
    16 gauge Colourcraft wire
Fuzzy cord/tinsel ribbon (also try the big box chains!)

    Tools

Two-hole metal punch (If you don't have this tool yet, you need it. Trust me!)
    Round nose pliers
    Wire cutters
    Sharpee
    Scissors

    Instructions

    1. Trace bottom of tin on selected background paper.

    2. Cut out paper slightly smaller than outline so it fits inside of tin.

    3. Glue paper into tin and let dry.

    4. If you're using a flat image, decorate it with Stickles in coordinating colors. (I edged the images with a coordinating Stickles color and on one I added glitter all along the inside edge, which turned out really nicely when it dried.)

    5. If you want to add text, stamp letters on a thicker card stock or scrapbook paper using archival ink. Each letter paper should be about ½" tall.

    6. Trace bottom of tin along letters where they will be placed inside of tin o the letters have a slightly curved bottom. Cut them out.

    7. Cut out small strips of paper to make stands.

    8. Glue paper to back of letters allowing some paper (about ¼") to be bent on bottom. This will create your stand.

    9. Glue letters to inside bottom of tin and allow to dry. Cut tops of letters if there is overlap.

    10. If you are creating a stand up image, create your background and decorate it and allow to dry.

    11. Decorate the stand up image and allow to dry.

    12. Make a stand as before big enough to support your image.

    13. Glue into tin.

    14. Measure and mark even side hole placement for handles.

    15. Use two-hole punch to create holes for handles.

    16. Thread about a 3-4" length of Colourcraft wire into tin and use round nose pliers to bend into a small loop. Bend wire gently over your fingers to round and insert into hole on other side. Cut off any excess wire and loop with round nose pliers to secure.

    17. Wrap wire handle with fuzzy tinsel ribbon. Cut off excess and tuck in ends.

You can hang them with the clear glass lids on or off. I like them off so that you can really see the detail. When storing the dioramas use the lids so they stay lovely for years to come!

    Cheers,
    Madge

Katy Perry makin fun of Beyonce: HYSTERICAL- Must See video!

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 10:09 AM EST [General]

Katy Perry was filmed backstage at one of her shows makin fun of Beyonce's 'Single Ladies' dance. Who knows if she was being rude or just messing around- either way it's super funny and I love her more for it.

    And then there's this...

Some radio dude from another city and another station made a ridiculous video of his chubby buns in a leotard dancing to Beyonce's Single Ladies video. Ummm. Just watch.

Hahahaha. How can something be equally gross and funny? I just spit out my coffee- still laughing! And...can't stop replaying.

P.S. If you're wondering what the official Beyonce video/dance looks like, here you are:

Quite a revolution in leotard sales.

Now it's your turn to film yourself doing Beyonce's dance. Go ahead. I know you want to!

Britney Spears: smells like teen spirit

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 03:06 PM GMT [General]

Britney Spears has launched two new perfumes for Christmas called Curious and Fantasy. Presumably Lipsync and Paparazzi were already taken.

My bed ridden mother-in-law called to ask if I could pick some up as a present for one of her grand-daughters. What, indeed, could be a more appropriate gift for the impressionable teenage girl in your life than the aromatic essence of a burned out, twice divorced, ex-Mickey Mouse club sexpot recovering from a nervous breakdown? Hey, she may have lost custody of her own kids, but that's no reason to keep her away from yours.

    Gallery Photo
Singing is for losers: Britney Spears

Demonstrating her continued significance as a role model to the young, Ms Spears was fresh from an appearance on the X Factor, where she gave the talent hopefuls an object lesson in how to really get on in the music business: by recording with autotune and miming your vocals. Next time Cowell and co criticise their singing, the contestants should just retort that they'll fix it in the studio. I mean, like, singing is for losers, duh. Breast implants are where its really at.

In promotional interviews for her new album, 'Circus', the star has weepily described herself as "sad", "lonely" and living a life that's "worse than being in prison." But at least she smells nice.

    Thinking out loud 12.2

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 10:06 AM EST [General]

So, Mike Brown said a whole lot of nothing with a whole lot of words.

    Oh well.

For the record, I've requested interviews several times, as have Mark Curnutte, Joe Kay and others. We're always turned down. For some reason, Mike Brown felt like today was the day he'd accept Curnutte's request. And anytime he accepts one of those interviews, the team's official website is involved as well.

I've interviewed Mike Brown once. You don't get as much as you'd like.

Oh well. It didn't tell me much except that if I'm a Bengals fan, I'm looking around for another team to root for, or just giving up on Sundays except for fantasy football.

    * Maybe the Bengals could win in this league. Maybe.

    * The Seattle Times reports the Mariners have talked to Brian Goldberg, the agent for Ken Griffey Jr.

    * Sticking with the Seattle Times, they report Fresno State coach Pat Hill had a "great" visit with Washington. If I'm a Bearcat fan, I don't worry about Washington. But, if I'm a Bearcat fan, I only start to sweat things if Charlie Weis is bounced from Notre Dame.

    * One of my favorite baseball writers, Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus, says he's out of the rumors game. Why? Because most of 'em are BS. Godspeed, Will. I salute you.

    * Baseball America has its list of Top 20 prospects from the Hawaiia Winter League -- Yonder Alonso is in at No. 3, Todd Frazier is No. 7. No. 2 is Cincinnati native Andrew Brackman.

    * Another day, another new stat. OK, wOBA isn't that new, but it was pretty new to me. And I like it. wOBA numbers have a new home, too. Here's a good primer on wOBA. (Hat tip to the fantastic Reds blog by Justin Inaz)

    * Wow, the Browns not only have Ken Dorsey as their quarterback -- they're looking at Bruce Gradkowski, according to ESPN's James Walker. Good luck with that

    * Those Cowboys sure do a good job of preparing their players for upcoming opponents.

    * How awful were those all-red Texan uniforms?

    * Is it just me, or was Lane Kiffin incredibly stiff yesterday when introduced as the Tennessee coach? And then, well, there's Tennessee saying he's the whole reason Southern Cal won so much when he was there.

    * And then there's the best part of college football -- crazy fans. Check out LSUFreek's Weekend in Review.

    * The women's Crosstown Shootout is Sunday at Fifth Third Arena. So far, more than 8,000 tickets have been sold. Two years ago when it was at UC, it sold out.

    * One of my favorite blogs, A Largehearted Boy, has his Top 10 albums of 2008.

    * Vanity Fair has a feature on Tina Fey, including the details of her now-not-so-mysterious scar. Her husband spilled the beans. Tina, if you're mad about that, I'd never tell. Really.

    * Speaking of awesome -- the Holliday Hack Newsroom Bingo!

Heavy Is The Head That Wears The Crown

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 10:04 AM EST [General]

Lebron James needs to respect his surroundings in Cleveland

    image
SEATTLE -- They may call LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, "The King" but most recently he has traded in the Crown for a Dunce Cap.

The past few weeks all that has been spoken about in the media regarding the All-Star forward was his intentions in 2010 and the likelihood of him playing in New York when he would became a free agent.

Things really got a little crazy at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday when the Cavaliers came in town to play the New York Knicks.  There wasn't an extra ticket available and all the celebrities were on hand for the event.

Now I've heard the comments made by LeBron such as, "I'm going to do what's best for me and my family," "I will definitely explore my options when the time comes," and one of my personal favorites, "I'm not oppose to going out of the country to play."

Are you kidding me?  There's no substitute for the NBA and every year the list of foreign players m

Okay, so he wants to be on a Championship team, I get that but that only happens when you win a Championship. Duh!   We were all witness just a couple of years ago as the Cavaliers advanced through the playoffs, remember?

When Michael Jordan was playing for the Bulls there were some tough times early on in Chicago. The Detroit Pistons were their evil nemesis and would eliminate any thoughts that they may have had of winning a championship for many years.   Jordan stuck it out, took a cut in pay for the organization to get all the pieces together and the rest as they say is history.

If I hear just one more professional athlete in any spor
